Another First Day
This week we have been fortunate to be able to welcome students back into the building. I know there will have been some trepidation in what for many probably felt like another first day, but my observations suggest that the students have been quick to get back into the routine and the joy of seeing friends again has dispelled most of the anxiety. As we found last semester, the students have been good about following the rules to keep one another safe, though that scientific phenomenon of the natural coalescence of teenagers means they do need the occasional reminder to keep their distance in between classes.
The IB Art students have been setting up their displays for the upcoming exhibition and there are some highly creative pieces on show. This week as well, the winner of the YPI (Youth Philanthropy Initiative Award) was announced for the Grade 9 Global Perspectives students. The YPI challenges teams of students to work collaboratively on identifying a local issue that they feel passionate about and then advocating for a charity that addresses the problem. The strongest case based on the criteria provided by YPI earns a grant of £3000 from the Wood Foundation. It is a meaningful learning experience for our students and obviously greatly benefits one local charity. Congratulations to everyone involved in this process which ultimately yielded a large donation for Aberdeen Cyrenians.
At the end of this week we have virtual parent teacher conferences and I hope you have been able to make appointments to see the teachers you would like to speak to. Several of our teachers see many students and will have quite full schedules. If you are unable to get a slot to see them, please drop them a note directly. I usually enjoy catching up with parents informally in the corridors during these conferences but sadly that won't be possible. If you want to speak with me at anytime though, please get in touch and we can set up an appointment.
