Inspiring Presenters
This week our students have enjoyed a virtual visit by author and journalist Lesley Riddoch. Our librarian, Josie Crimp, invited this speaker as someone who could build on themes covered in English lessons and challenge the students' thinking. I am grateful for the financial support of the PTO which helped make this inspiring visit possible. Over the years I have seen numerous poets and writers present to the students and never failed to be uplifted by the anecdotes shared and advice given.
There is much to be gained from creating opportunities for students to engage with guest speakers. As well as numerous university 'visits', specific classes have heard from Constable Gary Marr on digital safety, been taken on a live bicycle tour of Medellin (in Spanish) and discussed environmental challenges with Professor Colin Moffit (a scientific advisor to the government) in recent weeks. Breaking up learning routines and hearing a different voice can be a real breath of fresh air for students and adds a new perspective to their learning.
We are also fortunate that many of our parents are willing to support programmes by either acting as mentors in projects, or presenting to classes as experts in a particular field. These connections are also invaluable for the Careers in our Community event each semester. If you feel you have something you can offer to a class or are simply interested in finding out if there is somewhere you might be able to support the students' learning, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
