Using Data to Support Teaching and Learning
This week we have had our first cluster of Grade 12 mocks and exams for Grade 10 students are only a short time away. At the end of the semester Grade 9 and 11 students will take exams and our middle school students are frequently exposed to end of unit tests. These summative assessments are vital for recognising the knowledge and skills students have developed and giving students the chance to reflect on their learning ahead of their next step.
In addition to this, students take a MAP standardised test twice a year in Reading, Language and Maths and we are trialling the Science version of this test with one grade level. We also now get information for Grade 11 students from CEM tests. MAP and CEM tests are short in length and relatively easy to administer but give an important insight into ensuring our programmes and written curriculum support student growth. They also give a snapshot of where a student is at in relation to others around the world and help teachers plan activities to ensure that each individual feels appropriately challenged and is accessing the best resources.
Over a few weeks in May your son or daughter will likely have these short MAP tests scheduled across some of their classes. They are nothing to worry about, there is no pass/fail associated with them and we will share the results with families. We do ask though that students take them seriously and give as good account of themselves as possible so that we have valuable data to support their future learning.
