Planning for Things that Shouldn't Happen
One of the more curious aspects of my job is having to plan for things that I hope won’t happen and are, fortunately, very unlikely to. For example, if there is a fire, I need to consider questions like: where would we evacuate to, how would we contact parents, how would we continue schooling if the buildings were no longer safe?
Although such events are rare, the plans have to be revisited every year because circumstances change and new experience informs our understanding of what needs to be done. It is funny looking back on old plans for responding to an epidemic, written before we really knew the potential of technology or had experienced a government mandated stay at home order.
We learnt things that go beyond how we would deal with the outbreak of a disease, tips for other potential emergencies as well. We were strongly reminded of the importance of accurate information and good communication.
Over the last year, you will have noticed a number of changes: some of them are obvious - from the Community Hub to online parent meetings; some of them more behind the scenes - the greater use of Powerschool for example, most recently for activity sign ups.
We have been tidying up a lot of our student information - trying to make sure it in one place, consistent and not repeated. Above all, that it is all there. So if you haven’t filled in the 2021 Contact Update form in PowerSchool (info here) yet please do so as soon as possible. And while you are in could you check the ‘Intentions’ form to help us plan for next year.
We can’t be sure what will happen, we can be sure that we need accurate and up to date information.
