From the Middle-High School Principal

 Freedom From Chemical Dependency (FCD)

Last Friday our Grade 6-11 students met Mr G. Mr G works for FCD which is an organisation that talks openly and honestly with students about addiction and the dangers associated with nicotine, alcohol and other drugs. One of the most powerful aspects of the programmes is that all the workshop leaders are former addicts themselves with first hand experience that they are willing to share with students.

In the 40-minute Meets using the large Smart Touch screen in our small gym, the year groups engaged with Mr G on a range of pre-planned age appropriate topics. The topics were chosen in conjunction with our counsellor, Mrs DeGraw, and in the past during longer workshops we have also had teacher and parent sessions running. Throughout the year, students will also learn about some of these issues in their health classes but having someone with first hand knowledge talk directly to the kids will be a very powerful message.

You can find out more about FCD on their website (fcd.org) but it will be worth asking your son or daughter about their session with Mr G to help them reflect on some of the issues they learnt about.
