Counsellor's Corner

At ISA we often use the Shanarri wheel when discussing students and their wellbeing.  These indicators (Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, and Included), help to guide how we assist students with positive growth both academically and socially. The indicators are based on the Scottish safeguarding framework of “Getting it Right for Every Child” (Girfec).

This week our child protection (DCPC) team got a chance to explore some case studies to help apply the Girfec model in practice, and to learn about Scottish legislation.  During the training we also discussed becoming trauma aware, with an understanding of how to respond to those with adverse circumstances.  These skills are especially important during pandemic times.

Parents can also become trauma aware.  If you would like to read more about becoming a trauma aware parent, YoungMinds has an excellent guide here.

Have a lovely weekend!

Warm Regards,

Valerie DeGraw
