Learning for All
Next week our students can look forward to a slightly longer weekend with an in-service day taking place on Thursday 17th February. For some this will be a chance to disconnect and take a break, others will be able to catch up on work and many will be looking to get ahead with coursework, consolidate learning or start their revision for upcoming mock and semester exams.
I occasionally hear frustration over a lost day of contact but these in-service days are hugely important in maintaining the character of the school. On Thursday there will be a significant focus on intercultural learning and cross division discussions will take place that introduce new resources and encourage the sharing of good practices. In addition, at middle and high school, teachers will be given time to identify related units between their subjects and build cross curricular activities. We also have a session within subject groups to discuss effective strategies for helping students prepare for summative assessments and external examinations and share ways in which students can be pushed up into the next grade boundary.
A course I attended several years ago mentioned the 'important' versus the 'urgent' and how often it was the latter that meant longer term improvements stalled. I am pleased we have these days scheduled in our calendar to breath life into our approaches to teaching and learning and keep what we do at ISA current and relevant.
