Counsellor's Corner

How important is exercise for mental health?

Very important!  Doctors are even prescribing exercise for depression as noted in this NHS post hereIn our last Counsellor's Corner, we spoke about the benefits of small talk to help nurture social connection.  Exercise is also a helpful way to make social connections and engage in small talk.

For adolescents, regular exercise lowers the risk of depression, and promotes self esteem and connectedness.  There is a strong correlation of less anxiety in children who exercise. Physical activity might also improve adolescent sleep patterns.

In addition to regular PE classes, our students have the opportunity to join after school sports and clubs.  Don’t forget to check out the ISA After School Activity Schedule here.  Additionally, you can find the schedule on the community hub in the quick links section below the daily notices.

Some of our after school activities include: Judo, football, basketball, swimming, yoga, weight lifting, volleyball, badminton, boxercise, disco, and others. There are also clubs such as mindfulness, cooking, film, and instrumental music.  Take a look, hopefully there is something your children will be inspired to join.  If your family prefers outdoor pursuits, Majestic Aberdeenshire has some lovely nature walks here.

Exercises is not only important, it is vital to our  mental wellbeing!

Warm regards,

Valerie DeGraw
