Counsellor's Corner

Transitions

As ISA counsellors, we are always thinking about transitions. Tomorrow is our today so that we can ensure a successful landing with new routines.  Next school year is just around the corner!

Ms Barker

It has been a busy semester so far in the high school counselling office. Our Grade 12s have university offers rolling in and soon will have to make decisions on their firm and insurance choices.

Grade 11 family meetings took place last month and Ms. Barker really enjoyed discussing university goals, academic progress and looking ahead to next year in these meetings.

While Grade 10s are preparing for their mocks, Ms. Barker has enjoyed meeting with many of them to create a revision schedule and look at effective study strategies. With Morrisby psychometric profiling behind them, our Grade 10s all met with Ms. Barker this week for their individual IB/pathways. It was lovely to see such a variety of interest in the group and Ms. Barker is excited to support each of their unique journeys.

Grade 9s will be making some course requests for next year, so Ms. Barker will be spending more time with them in the coming weeks discussing what they would like to continue studying and looking ahead too at their Morrisby Careers suggestions.

The Grade 8s recently had a high school course registration meeting with Ms. Barker. It was wonderful to see these students again and we will look forward to helping them transition to the high school. We had some great discussions about the high school programme in general, around our subject offerings and of course the option of taking the IGCSEs. As always, if you have any questions about course requests for 2022-23, please get in touch with Ms. Barker (hbarker@isa.aberdeen.sch.uk).

Mrs DeGraw

Mrs. Degraw enjoyed visiting 5th grade last week to begin transition activities for middle school.  We had some fun taking a look at sample schedules and becoming familiar with new routines and activities in 6th grade.  This powerpoint highlights some of the topics we introduced here.  We also completed a North, South, East, West activity:  What are you EXCITED about (East), What are you WONDERING about (West), What information do you NEED (North), and what are your SUGGESTIONS (South).  We’ll use this information and student voice to help guide further transition activities with the students as they prepare for middle school.

Course registration forms for middle school will come out later this spring as mentioned previously in this parent letter here.

In 7th grade health we learned about balancing perspectives on stress, peer pressure, how to rethink social influences and how we choose to spend our time. In Kindergarten we opened up our coping skills toolbox to learn about a new choice wheel for self regulation.  Here is the new choice wheel if you want to take a look.

We are meeting with many new students in preparation for attending ISA this spring or the new school year.  We look forward to helping our present students transition to the next year with resilience, and to supporting our new students with social, academic, and emotional success.

Have a lovely holiday!  Warm regards,  Mrs. DeGraw
