From the Middle/High School Principal

The Business End of the Year

On Friday this week our grade 12s begin their study leave ahead of the IBDP exams starting at the end of the month. Our IGCSE test takers in grade 10 are also eligible for study leave ahead of their exams. This can be a potentially stressful time for students and effective preparation is key to fulfilling potential. When people think about preparing for exams they will rightly focus on revision. Students have been shown numerous strategies by teachers and given access to helpful resources. Past paper questions at this stage can be very beneficial and it is essential a student is always challenging their knowledge rather than reading passively. The other side of the preparation relates to well being - having the right mindset to do one's best. Breaks during revision sessions are important along with eating healthily, getting support from family and friends, and ensuring enough rest. Cramming through the night ahead of a test is unlikely to yield a good result.

The SQA has a parentzone site that contains information on how to support your child through an exam period. Though some of the information is specific to local qualifications, you may find the pointers useful or reassuring.
