Difficult News

Talking to children about difficult news is a fine balance of validating their need to talk, and also helping them to feel safe.  Our children have heard a lot of difficult news over the past few years with covid, war, and world news in general.  Their access to news is fast and furious, sometimes with little time to process until the next headline or event.

If you are looking for some tips to help your child process difficult news, BBC "Own it", says it best:

1. Don't hide the truth from your children
2. Put what they know in perspective
3. Normalize worries (help them to avoid catastrophic thinking)
4. Let them know they are safe
5. Help them get involved in solutions
6. Be sensible with news consumption
