Theory of Knowledge
This Friday our Grade 11 students held their TOK (Theory of Knowledge) exhibition in the Street area. Not only was it great to have yet another face to face activity back on the calendar, it also provided an opportunity for our community to learn a little more about TOK.
Theory of Knowledge is a component of the IB Diploma Programme's Core along with the Extended Essay and CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service). The Core is one aspect that sets the qualification apart from national systems, promoting critical thinking and giving a strong foundation for tertiary education. The TOK exhibition aims to have students explore how TOK manifests itself in the world around us. Students choose three objects and use these to respond to a choice of prompts from the IB. As well as a written commentary the students are encouraged to explain their understanding to visitors to the exhibition. Some of the prompts include; 'What counts as knowledge?', 'To what extent is certainty attainable?' 'What constraints are there on the pursuit of knowledge?'
Critical thinking plays a key role in our learning across all grade levels and I hope that the Grade 11 students involved in the exhibition have enjoyed questioning how they know what they think they know.
