Self Directed Learning (SDL)
This week our Self Directed Learning (SDL) programme comes to an end for Grade 9 with a celebration of the students' work and reflections. Students have been given the opportunity to follow a learning pathway that was of interest to them during their elective blocks each Friday. The process was scaffolded with reflections, examples and templates to help them develop ideas and approaches. Their elective teachers and other specialists in the building have been offering input and guidance.
This is the second year we have run this and the results have been excellent. Even those that perhaps didn't make the progress they hoped for have been able to reflect meaningfully on what went wrong and will learn from the experience. Some chose something that was an extension of one of the subjects they were already studying e.g. artistic techniques, 3D printing. Some chose skills they had always wanted to develop e.g. sign language, crochet. Some chose topics that supported an area of interest for the future and will be able to make reference to their learning on their UCAS Personal Statements e.g. architecture, history.
The students showed good perseverance and initiative and can be proud of their efforts. I have shared a couple of examples of the final reflections here.
