Student Voice
ISA is a part of the Rights Respecting Schools programme and we are keen to involve students in their own education as much as possible. I wrote last week about student choice in learning and assessments but they also have a part to play in policy development.
The middle school student council will soon be elected with representatives meeting with me on a fortnightly basis. I currently meet the High School student council president twice a month and recently that group shared with me proposed changes to the school's dress code in an effort to remove gender bias from the statements and align expectations with our school values. We have also started the process of creating a gender inclusion policy with student input and following student feedback have reviewed a decision regarding personal devices in grade 11/12 and access to the school's wi-fi.
These processes are collaborative and hopefully mean that our stakeholders feel included in decision making and as a result understand why we have certain behaviour expectations in place. The current mobile phone policy for example came initially from the students who wanted to ensure that face to face interactions weren't impacted but high school students had the opportunity to discreetly check messages ner lockers in between lessons. Though reminders on that issue are frequently needed, I hope most of our students are getting more from their lunch breaks as a result of being away from social media.
