The Group Four Project
Monday morning saw the front of school turn into a hive of activity. Students were mustering for our activities week trips and getting ready to board buses. We had buses running to: Fort William (Grade11 canoe expedition), Northern Ireland (Grade 10 conflict resolution) Northumberland (Grade 9 environmental stewardship), Aberfoyle (Middle School outdoor activities), Peterhead Prison (High School local trips) and Deeside Activity Centre (Middle School local trips). Reports from leaders at the time of writing this message show that our students are enjoying these opportunities. One group though is have a 'not trip' week as our teachers have called it. The Grade 12 cohort is working at school.
They are making effective use of this week off timetable with great progress being made on internal assessment tasks, aspects of the core and college applications. They are also getting to try something different with therapy dogs, budgeting and self defence sessions listed in the agenda. On Tuesday they completed the Group Four project. This 10-hour collaborative project has taken a different format this year with groups of students from across the sciences working to solve a single problem. Their task was to find a way to time the length of a song without using anything that ordinarily carries out that function, or has been pre-built to measure time. Solutions ranged from flow/viscosity devices to electrical circuitry.
It was a pleasure to watch them engaging with the challenge, testing out solutions and collaborating so effectively. The day offered further evidence to me of the strengths of an IB education. The skills the students are developing through activities like this will stand them in very good stead for the future.
