Students helping Students
Val Garry, our CAS coordinator shared with me some data showing how grade 11 and 12 students were supporting projects within the school as part of their Community Activity Sevice (CAS). The list is presented below. Keep in mind this is in addition to all the great work that takes place off campus. We also have an National Honor Society (NHS) that offers peer tutoring and many students building a sense of community through their work with student council.
The transition from lockdown and virtual school has allowed more opportunities to open up for our students and I am pleased our current IB cohort is taking advantage of these. An important aspect of CAS is reflection and the structure of the CAS projects takes 'service' to 'service learning'. Our Duke of Edinburgh Award from grade 9 and now the Junior Duke allow for younger students to experience the value in helping others. In middle school the active citizenship programme that is part of the health curriculum gives students an important taste of service learning.
CAS is a requirement for all diploma students and serving others is a key part of the Duke of Edinburgh award. However, any middle/high school student undertaking meaningful service can receive recognition for their work through the Saltire Awards. This award is something advisors recommend to students at ISA and it will be well worth your son or daughter looking into if they aren't already registered.
