National Honor Society
This week, Mr Klopp invited those in Grade 10 who were achieving above a certain report card average to apply for a place with the National Honor Society (NHS). As well as a strong academic record, students must show good character, a high level of integrity, have experience of leadership and be willing to serve their school community.
Though it has taken me a while to come to terms with the spelling of the middle word in the title, I have seen the group do some incredible things over the past decade. One major, school wide event each autumn is Trunk or Treat. Last October one of our grade 12 students took me through their haunted house and even with the lights on and him simply describing what was in store gave me the heebie-jeebies. Throughout the year NHS members offer peer tutoring and this has been key in changing learning outcomes for some of our younger students. The tutees form a strong connection with their more senior mentor and benefit greatly from the sessions.
If your child has been invited to apply, I hope they will complete the relevant forms and put themselves forwards to the selection panel who review applications and ensure candidates meet the society's clear criteria. This is an internationally recognised instution and a great opportunity for students to grow whilst making a positive contribution to their community.
