Cross Cultural Kids One of my favourite questions to ask students is, "Where are all the places you have lived?" Some of our students will respond with a variety of international experiences, some have multiple passports, and some will describe home or school moves within the UK. Everybody has something to say about where they have lived and it’s such an important part of their identity. Ruth Van Reken is famous for her books and research on cross-cultural kids, a phenomena that is more common now than ever. The term cross-cultural kids has many sub categories (for example TCK-Third Cultural Kids). You can even be a cross-cultural kid if you have moved many times within your home country! Celebrations of identity like our International Week at ISA can help to create a sense of belonging within our shared experiences and differences. Cross-cultural kids often speak multiple languages, are good observers, get along with many different types of people, and they can excel at a three-dimensional world view (the ability to see things from more than one perspective). Culture, whether far or near, is important for our identity and confidence. We hope that ISA’s activities help to nurture a sense of belonging in this fast paced world. Have a lovely weekend.
