Industrial Cadets
I was fortunate to travel as the second chaperone to the Industrial Cadets event at the University of Aberdeen on Thursday this week whilst everyone at ISA was busily preparing for the excellent International Day. Two teams have been working hard on design projects that challenged their creativity, problem solving and construction skills. Students chose from one of four briefs relating to sustainable development. The twelve grade 8 students had to model and present their sustainable development solutions to a panel of judges and along the way have been supported by mentors from Taqa and their ever-enthusiastic science teacher.
It was a great experience for the students and the reflections showed how impactful this extended piece of teamworking had been in terms of developing communication and collaboration skills. Many afternoons were given to moving ideas forward and the students showed excellent commitment. As well as generous support and input from the visiting mentors they were able to attend Taqa's offices. The students showcased their work at the Fraser Noble building at Aberdeen University and were given a tour of the campus as part of their day.
ISA was the only school to have two teams in the competition and both received a high level of praise for their concepts. One of our teams won the science quiz that ran in parallel with the day's proceedings and the other won the competition over all. That team will be invited to the national finals in Edinburgh in June.
