International Festival 2023
Next Thursday (April 27), you are warmly invited to the International Evening, where you can enjoy a parade of identities, view cultural displays, sample foods from around the world, listen to folktales from a variety of cultures and, perhaps most importantly, see student work related to learning about a diverse array of cultures, nationalities and identities. All the Preschool and Elementary children are encouraged to act as tour guides for their parents and carers as they visit the classrooms and other displays, taking in examples of student learning in Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Writing and more. They should stay with you throughout the tour of all the classes from Preschool through Grade 5. A walk through the school will be memorable for the dazzling artwork that will greet visitors at every turn. Congratulations to Mandy Goynes, our incredible art teacher, for her continuous efforts to inspire the best out of her students. A special shout out to parent volunteer, Emma Jaclin, for her countless hours of support in helping to set up the art displays (and not just for the Open House, but throughout the year).
The overarching theme of this year’s International Evening (Thursday, April 27, 18:00-20:00) is “Making Connections”, offering us the chance to celebrate our personal connections to the world, but also the connections between us all as a community. The evening will begin with a parade, which will be slightly different than in previous years. For the parade, we will be walking together in unified grade-level groups. The children are still invited to dress in national dress, but this does not need to be confined to one culture. In fact, it could represent a hybrid of all the cultures with which a student feels a particular connection. Students can also bring small flags with them should they wish. The evening will also feature the Global Village (which will include displays of information, pictures and artefacts, with a particular focus on customs related to births, deaths and marriages).
In years past, the buffet of international foods was organised by continent/geographical region. This year, the International Food Festival will instead be organised to reflect the theme of “Making Connections”. So, the “Glorious Grains” table will showcase dishes based on rice (or other grains) from around the world. Similarly, the “Warm and Hearty” section will feature soups and stews from a wide range of cultures and culinary traditions. Be sure to get around to each table to see (and taste) for yourself the ways in which food connects us all.
A huge thank you to Natalie Dalziel and her planning team, as well as the teachers, the students, the support staff and the parent volunteers for all the work that goes into making such an event come to life.
International Week Assembly - Monday, April 24th (1:30pm in the QET)
Each year group is currently busy finalising plans to make for a most memorable occasion. We have a dynamic assembly on Monday afternoon (1:30pm in the QET) to officially start a week of sharing amongst all the classes. Please remember that due to limited space in the theatre, only one member of each household can attend the Monday, April 24 AFTERNOON assembly. Please also remember that there will not be a Monday morning assembly.
Information about High School programmes and pathways
Dr. Carmichael would like to extend an invitation to parents and carers with children in Preschool, Elementary and Middle School to an informal, online Q&A session next Tuesday, April 25, at 2:00pm. This session is for parents/carers who have questions about programmes and pathways running from Grades 9 to 12, including the IGCSE and IBDP. Although High School might still be many years away for your child/ren, you will be able to hear a brief overview before having the chance to ask questions about what to expect when that time comes.
