Our high school and careers counsellor, Ms Barker, has been busy supporting students in preparation for their university applications. Grade 12s have filled out their UCAS applications with just choices and their personal statements to add later on. All students are working on their personal statement or US essay drafts, with some already in the reviewing stages with Ms. Barker. The Grade 12s enjoyed a visit to the University of Aberdeen Discover Event, where they met with representatives from many of the Scottish Universities. Ms. Barker has also been meeting students and families to provide support advice and resources for those considering an alternative route to university.
Professor Vera Kempe visited the grade 9s to discuss learning strategies proven by science as well as some study tips. Ms. Barker has been following up with grade 9s and 10s individually during advisory times to revisit the strategies and offer additional organisation and time management support to those who request this or need additional academic support. Ms. Barker had a 'Transition to the High School' Q&A breakfast with Grade 9s on September 8th. Students were given an overview of our High School programmes and how to find support along the way if needed.
Mrs DeGraw, our social emotional counsellor, has enjoyed visiting 7th grade health to talk about balancing perspectives on stress, peer pressure, and how to rethink social influences. In 3rd grade we introduced flexible thinking and learned all about how using this executive function skill helps us to have success with friends and with learning new skills. In kindergarten we are meeting safety bear and practising the choice wheel to help with coping skills for friendship. We have started lunch bunches in primary, and all the students will get a chance to have a group lunch with the counsellor to reinforce friendship and self regulation skills.
