Kindness Week by Paul Bertolotto

The importance of kindness

Next week sees us celebrate our Preschool and Elementary School Kindness Week.  This is always a highlight for children, teachers and parents as it offers us the opportunity, as a team, to slow down, pause and reflect on the importance of nurturing positive relationships and of utilising our wonderfully caring community.

In organising our Kindness Week, our community will come together to celebrate, promote, and deepen the bonds of friendship and teamwork among our children. Kindness is central to everything we do at ISA and, although we make a point of celebrating this during next week, our embedded approach means that our values and expectations for kindness should always be evident.  Please look out for our future kindness plans which include playground ambassadors, an outdoor library and Buddy Benches.

Promoting Inclusivity and Acceptance

Our Kindness Week provides us with an opportunity to emphasise the importance of inclusivity and acceptance. Through our various activities, the children will be invited to ‘colour our school with kindness’ by ‘filling our kindness buckets’ with acts of kindness they have witnessed and undertaken.  Please, if you get a chance, take a look at our colourful kindness buckets just outside Mr Little and Mr Kajiwara’s rooms at the school reception area.

Building Stronger Relationships

Next week's focus on kindness will encourage children to connect with peers beyond their immediate social circles. Engaging in collaborative activities, both at home and in school, will encourage connections that might not have happened otherwise.  Please look out for our kindness chain home-learning activity which asks parents and children to create one link, reflecting on acts of kindness, for our whole school paperchain.

Encouraging positive interactions

By noticing and modelling acts of kindness, our children will become intrinsically involved in the enhancement of a positive and mutually supportive atmosphere which reminds fellow children, parents and teachers of their own individual strengths and positive traits. By taking time to listen to and to share these feelings with their peers, our students will gain an understanding of other perspectives which will encourage them to continue to treat each other with kindness, respect and consideration.

Enhancing Social Skills

Our Kindness Week starts with an assembly, led by Grade 5 students.  We’d be delighted if you could join us for this - It really would be very ‘kind’ of you (- apologies, I can’t help it).  Our assembly starts at 8.30am on Monday morning and will offer children opportunities to explain our activities to the whole school community.

A sentence that has stuck with me as I’ve watched the children rehearse is that we should:

‘watch our kindness spread like ripples in a pond’ (Tiffany, Grade 5).

This analogy/metaphor wonderfully illustrates the impact of community kindness.

Boosting Self-Esteem

By identifying the kind acts of others and by reflecting on our own kind acts we each help in boosting the self-esteem and confidence of every member of our team. By colouring our school in kindness (there will be loads of coloured post-its displayed in our kindness buckets) we will develop a positive self-image and a stronger sense of self-worth.

Encouraging Acts of Kindness

During next week we will be encouraging random acts of kindness. Small gestures of goodwill—like compliments, helping others,  sharing or even a small smile — each of which can help create that amazing ‘ripple’ effect which is so impressively articulated by Tiffany in our school assembly.

Strengthening Teacher-Student Relationships

Our Kindness Week will provide us with an opportunity to engage with our children in a more relaxed and interactive setting. By getting involved in filling our buckets of kindness, and in colouring our school in kindness, we will further strengthen our relationships, which will assist children in feeling more comfortable in seeking help or dialogue in the future.

Encouraging Reflection

Next week’s activities will encourage much discussion and reflection about the meaning of, and the importance of, being kind. Children, teachers and parents will be asked to consider the role of kindness in our lives and how this can best foster personal growth and self-awareness.

Creating Lasting Memories

Possibly most important of all factors for next week's kindness focus is that of creating vivid and memorable experiences for our school community.  Our assembly, our shared activities, our filled buckets, our colouring of our school with kindness, our smiles and laughter, and our new friendships will leave a positive imprint that all members of our school community can carry with them throughout our school years and beyond.

We wish every member of our community a truly special Kindness Week.
