Happy Holidays
Many cultures have a festival of light during the winter months. Sometimes, as with Christianity, that light is symbolic - a celebration of goodness coming into the world. The further you are from the equator, the darker it gets at this time of year, the greater the need not to take the good things in life for granted.
Festivities at the year’s lowest point are a testament to the human spirit: our ability to focus on the good in the darkness; to make the most of things in difficult times. A reminder that nothing is all good or all bad.
MIddle and HIgh School reports are issued today (elementary ones come out in mid-January). They are intended as statements of where students are at and the next steps they need to take to improve in each of their subjects. However Students spend a large part of their lives at school, how they are doing there is part of their identity; we cannot deny the emotional impact.
But as this season reminds us, there is never all dark or all light. Though sometimes we have to give the light a helping hand: to celebrate progress and to recognise strengths as well as to reflect on what next steps to take.
But for now, resolutions can be put off for January. I hope you have a wonderful festive break, enjoying time with family and staying safe.
