In our counselling Thistle at the beginning of the month we talked about tiny habits and the Japanese concept of Kaizen - how small changes over time make a big difference.
Similarly, behavioral activation, a CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) skill, can help our children with social confidence and more positive emotional states. By identifying something they might be interested in we help them make small changes towards goals that will improve things like social interaction, hobbies, and sports. CBT helps kids understand how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected and behavioral activation helps us use behaviors to change our emotional state.
By helping children identify goals, and nurturing small changes or "tiny habits" to achieve those goals, we can help them change avoidance habits to participation over time, which helps to improve mood and self esteem. These small steps can help our children to feel more connected.
Don't forget to check out our after school activity schedule for some ideas to engage with hobbies and friends.
Have a lovely weekend!
Warm regards,
Valerie DeGraw
