Counsellor's Corner

My Voice Matters!

Place2be promotes mental health awareness for schools in the UK and the theme for Children’s Mental Health Week in February this year is “My Voice Matters!” You can read all about it here.

Student voice and agency is important at ISA all year long, and the students can participate in leadership activities such as student councils, model united nations, national honour society, school newspaper, mindful mentors club, language and culture advocates, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Junior Duke Award, and more.

Our middle school student council holds regular town halls to engage with the students on their voice about important school matters, and they recently had a town hall about teaching and learning. Student agency and voice is an important skill for our student's wellbeing and learning as they navigate complex academic and social environments. The ability to reflect, regulate, and monitor cognitive processes and actions to help make a difference, can give children a sense of purpose and self efficacy.

As we think about children's mental health week this year, don't forget to encourage your young person or child to engage in positive activities that help to improve their self esteem, voice, and leadership skills. These activities improve their own mental health, and also make our community a safe and caring learning environment.

Warm regards, Valerie DeGraw
