Adolescence - Why it's so important for the Brain!

I enjoyed visiting 7th grade health this month to talk about balancing perspectives on stress, peer pressure and how to rethink social influences.

We also learned how vitally important adolescence is for the brain.  As small children we generalise by learning as much as we can.  During adolescence we "prune" our interests, and learn to focus on our passions.  If we nurture healthy hobbies and passions during adolescence, this can have a positive impact on lifelong wellbeing and learning.

We viewed Dan Siegel's video, "The Adolescent Brain", to learn more about this concept.  Dan Siegel is an expert on the teenage brain.  He celebrates this time in life, and reminds us that many myths about this age aren't true. Using attention (an important executive function), and focusing on what we want to improve, can change the structure of our brain in a positive way.

How are adolescents using their time?  Take a look at Dan Siegel's short video, and start thinking about some hobbies, sports, instruments, or creative pursuits to nurture and support for your young person.  It's much more important than you might realise!

Have a lovely weekend.

Warm regards,
Valerie DeGraw
