*This week's photos come from our World Book Day and International Women's Day reading events. You can see some examples of the costumes that children and staff wore for World Book Day, as well as a few Story Spoons, which children shared with one another, getting them to talk about their favourite characters and stories. You can also see an example of a teacher reading aloud to some children, as well as a snapshot from the student-written and student-led assembly. Lastly, there is an image from the International Women's Day read aloud visit between Grade 4 and the Grade 11 computer science students.
Parent-Teacher conferences
We are preparing for the Parent Teacher Conferences that will take place next week. These discussions are most productive when we take the chance to follow-up with conversations with the children - both at school and at home. Talks at home serve to both reward the effort your children are making and provide clear expectations about future goals and how to achieve them.
Please remember there are no classes for students on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15. Please also note that there will be NO after school activities or clubs on Wednesday, March 13. The school day will end at 3:00pm for all children on that day to allow our teachers to get ready for their first conferences at 3:15pm.
The formal conferences are part of a multi-layered communication process that should continue with regular feedback that involves parents, students and teachers. Before the conferences take place, I encourage parents to ask their children about the feedback they have received at school and what areas they feel require further growth, as well as the places they are seeking more challenges. The best education occurs when there is a dynamic dialogue between everyone: students, parents and teachers.
World Book Day & International Women’s Day
Sadly, World Book Day 2024 has come to a close. Over the course of the week, the children took part in a variety of activities to highlight the fact that reading matters and should be considered one of life’s great pleasures. It was clear from their excitement and engagement that the students gained tremendously from the activities - especially during Thursday’s special timetable in recognition of World Book Day. We hope, as parents, you will continue to share your joy of reading regularly with your children to keep building on this momentum.
The read-aloud theme didn’t stop once World Book Day came to end, however. In recognition of International Women’s Day (March 8), grade levels from across the school came together for paired reading sessions. For example, Grade 11 students joined up with Grade 4 to share true stories of women achievers in computing. After their visit, Mr. Krishna, the Grade 11 computer science teacher, shared some of his students’ impressions of the Grade 4 students:
"I was impressed by how much the students already knew!"
"Those were some very informed grade 4s..."
"It was good that they were so engaged through the whole thing. Made my task easy!"
"One of the kids knew who Kathy Johnson was from that Hidden Figures movie. Even I did not know that!"
"They were talking about NASA's supersonic jets!"
Later in the day, Kindergarten joined Grade 8, and Grade 1 joined Grade 6, to hear true stories of women achievers in scientific fields. There were other pairings during the day related to topics such as trade, culture and the role of oral storytelling in indigenous societies.
Lunchtime Concert
Our 4th Lunchtime Concert will take place at 12:40 pm on Tuesday, March 12. Individual students, including performers as young as Grade 1, will perform recital pieces in the Black Box Theatre. We will hear pieces on piano, saxophone, voice and violin! There will be first-time performers and returners. The family members of the children performing in the Lunchtime Recital are warmly and enthusiastically invited to attend.
