Counsellor's Corner

Learning how to cope with change builds resilience

Our counsellor's are busy helping the middle and high school students prepare for their next year courses.  5th grade is preparing for their first year in middle school and will be visiting 6th grade this spring for orientation activities.  Our 8th grade students are preparing for high school and learning all about pathways for the high school diploma.  The principals and counsellors are busy interviewing with new students in preparation for next school year, and our present students are soon looking forward to summer break.

Some of our students are preparing for international school moves, and some are participating in important goodbye activities for friends that are leaving. While all of these changes are exciting this time of year, the changes in routines can sometimes be distracting or worrying for the students.

Big Life Journal has some great advice on how to develop a growth mindset with change:

  • Give them time to prepare
  • Listen to their concerns
  • Read books about big life changes
  • Keep routines the same
  • Provide connection or play
  • Give them choices for a sense of agency
  • Talk about changes that they have been successful with in the past

Don't forget to read more about helpful strategies in the Big Life Journal.

Warm regards,

Valerie DeGraw
