We hope that your children are enjoying the start of school. To get the year off to a good start, these tips on resilience and transition might be helpful:
1. Encourage connections with friends in small manageable steps.
2. Provide a sense of purpose through hobbies, volunteering, and after school activities - this will help when friendships feel a bit wobbly.
3. Share examples of people who have overcome obstacles.
4. Validate your child's emotions, and help them advocate for their own solutions rather than rushing in to find a quick fix or solution.
5. Encourage your children to try new things, even if the outcome isn't perfect.
6. Remind them that we can't control everything, but we can control how we respond.
7. Look at challenges as short term obstacles.
8. "Re-frame" setbacks or events not going according to plan. Using cognitive flexibility helps us to manage worries.
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need anything this year. The wellbeing section of the community hub is helpful for who to contact for holistic care (academic, social, emotional, physical). We are happy to help and we want to hear from you!
Warm Regards,
Valerie DeGraw
