Culture Shock!
We are excited to see so many new families joining the international school this year. Our teachers and student ambassadors have been busy helping new students settle into school life at ISA.
Remember that it takes time to feel at home during a school move, and a new school is a new culture, even if you are from a nearby area. Attending an international school means that you are joining students from within our local community, and from many international locations; this brings many viewpoints, customs, and experiences.
Understanding the phases of culture shock can help make your transition to a new place a little easier:
Phase One - Honeymoon Phase. The excitement of joining a new school and meeting new friends can be very exciting. After the initial shock of moving schools, this can be a fun phase.
Phase Two - Frustration Phase. Some things are starting to bother you. You miss your old friends and routines. This can be a difficult time because you may become frustrated. Take some time to find activities that interest you so that you can make new friends and keep a positive outlook. Don’t forget to join some after school sports and clubs.
Phase Three - Adjustment Phase. Hey, this place isn’t so bad. You’ve reached the point where you can appreciate what your new school has to offer, and you’re starting to enjoy activities and friendships.
Phase Four - Acceptance Phase. One day you wake up and realize that you haven’t thought about the school move because you feel right at home!
