ISA Middle School Philosophy - Our Image of a Middle School Child
It was wonderful to see so many parents last week at the Middle and High School Open House. Mr Klopp, Middle Years Programme (MYP) Coodinator, and I enjoyed talking to the middle school parents about the middle school curriculum, and the importance of relationship building during the adolescent years.

Middle School is a transformational time in children’s lives and development. Children rapidly develop physically, psychologically, academically, socially and emotionally as they transition from childhood to early adulthood. The nature of this journey is unpredictable and each child’s journey is unique and valuable.
Middle Schoolers develop their rich understanding of the world through all their interactions. Social identity becomes increasingly important in social dynamics as middle schoolers look beyond the family for their sense of identity and belonging, and strive to understand the wider world. They are often fun, adventurous and inquisitive. Often at this age, middle schoolers explore their interests, passions and beliefs whilst shaping their sense of identity. They can question the world around them and challenge norms.
Middle schoolers wrestle with big questions and are curious. We know their brain is undergoing significant changes at this age, as they develop and strengthen many areas of their processing, thinking and personality.
High trust relationships and culture help create a sense of belonging for middle schoolers and can support their happiness. We seek to create an environment in which middle schoolers can safely and healthily explore their developing identity, in a socially and academically stimulating and safe environment.
