 Open House

In 1999 the Berlin Reichstag (parliament building) was reopened after long disuse and following damage in world war two.  The building had been used by the Nazis when in power and there was a feeling that Germany never wanted to return to a period of intolerance.

The design for the building's re-design had to somehow signal a new set of values around unity in diversity, healthy respect for each other and optimism.  The design chosen by Norman Foster was a huge glass dome.  The building was suddenly open, light flooded in, and secrecy was impossible.

Somehow under the event and naming of open house sit the same ideas.  We often have to be very careful about supervision of adults with access to children and normally you cannot walk around the campus and meet teachers freely.  So open house is an opportunity, like the Reichstag to celebrate our values as a diverse community, to welcome you in as parents whom we value, and also provide a check for us that when we expose our values and culture to the full light of scrutiny, we still see what we want to see: kindness and inclusion.
