Counsellor's Corner

Coping Skills Toolbox!

I enjoyed visiting 2nd grade last week, to talk about our "coping skills toolbox" for staying calm and happy.  We had some time to talk about the tools that we use for self regulation, friendship, and conflict resolution.  These skills for cognitive flexibility can help the students navigate friendships and emotions with resilience.

Cookie monster taught us all about self control and we practiced using the Solution Wheel along with learning some triangle belly breathing. We learned about Many Friends, Many Activities and talked about enjoying activities with different groups of friends (lunch, sports, clubs, etc).  It was fun to share about all the ways we can make friends with different interests.

We also got to see how one school practiced kindness for others through a service activity, and how kindness helps us build good friendship skills. I look forward to hearing all about how friendships are going when we meet during our group lunch bunches with the counsellor this year.

Have a lovely weekend!

Warm regards,
Valerie DeGraw
