Self Regulation - helpful tips for surviving holiday time!

Our students often use the solution wheel for self regulation (see above).  How can we help kids with self regulation at home?  Self regulation can look like:

  • Stopping to think before acting
  • Using a strategy for calming
  • Staying focused on a goal or plan
  • Waiting or delaying gratification
  • Adapting to change and "bouncing back" from worries
  • Cooperating with others by using the solution wheel

As children develop, parents can model self regulation by:

  • Modelling our own coping skills for stress
  • Encouraging flexible thinking
  • Praising bouncing back skills when things get difficult
  • Encouraging waiting and thinking before rushing in to fix things
  • Providing scaffolding for change or new routines (see article below)

Have a lovely holiday!
