Schools are really hectic places, until suddenly they aren’t, and fall silent for a few weeks. This week we have had all kinds of trips, performances, visits and presentations. Right up to the last minute. Middle school started the week with their music performance. On Tuesday, Grade 2s went to see the pantomime, Dick Whittington at the Aberdeen Arts Centre, on Wednesday Grade 4 were all kinds of interesting ‘critters’ in the Black Box - from giant spiders to bearded lizards, while Grade 10s gave presentations to earn donations for local charities. On Thursday, middle schoolers competed in house challenges, preschoolers performed for parents, Kindergarten watched The Snowman in the theatre, and Grade 11s and 12s enjoyed a different kind of cinematic experience later in the day. And today, we had our festive assemblies. And through it all, students had normal classes: the older ones reflecting on last week’s exams; the younger ones continuing to learn new things. This week, like all of those before it since August, had a great variety of activities. A great variety of children have participated in them. Both were united by a common sense of community and of purpose. Through our diversity, we are stronger. In both the elementary and middle/high school assemblies students were reminded of the many types of winter festivals from Christmas to Deepavali: it is easy to get caught up in the superficial differences and miss the commonalities that unite as humans: the celebration of life and light, the sense of loss and rebirth through the seasons. Over the next few weeks, I hope you all get the opportunity to rest and enjoy family in ways unique to you, but I am sure we can all identify with. Seasons greetings!
