 It takes children to raise a village

The saying is that 'it takes a village to raise a child'.  Whilst fair enough, it is also true that it takes children to raise a village.  Recognising that community is something that is created by the children right here, right now - is central to how we see our school.  

Some schools have a static identity and children are 'allowed in' - and the expectation is that the school makes the child conform to its uniform notion (often deeply outdated) of what they should be like.  We think otherwise. 

Every child who comes to ISA, for whatever period of time they come for, makes us who we are - not the other way around.  We don't 'allow them in'; rather we celebrate our rich, complex and vivid identity which they create as thriving and global citizens.  

This week, we found a beautiful way to embody this idea.  For all future seniors, they will leave their hand-print on the wall of the Grade 11,12 Workroom.  It is a simple act, and echoes an assembly Mr Little gave on the earliest communities who left their hand-prints on the walls of caves across the world to show they had been there and helped make the special histories we are all descended from.

Thanks to Ms Sanz and her advisory team for leading this, and the wonderful Grade 12s for being among the many children who quite literally make us what we are.
