We are scientists
Our Grade 2 students recently embarked on an eye-opening science activity: dissecting owl pellets. Owl pellets are the undigested, regurgitated remains of the prey that an owl has consumed. Items that can be found in an owl pellet include bones, fur, feathers and even insect exoskeletons. This hands-on exploration offered the children a unique opportunity to consider the role that owls play in the ecosystem through careful observation: by carefully examining the contents of these pellets, students were able to discover the bones of small mammals and birds that the owls had eaten. It’s a captivating and unforgettable way for children to connect directly with food chains and predator-prey relationships.
Through this activity, our young learners practiced essential scientific skills such as observation, analysis, and critical thinking. Dissecting owl pellets required patience, cooperation, attention to detail, and a willingness to engage in the messy (and smelly), yet rewarding, process of discovery. These are key skills that will serve the children well in their future scientific pursuits.
This hands-on approach aligns with the IB Learner Profile traits of Risk Takers and Inquirers. As risk takers, the students stepped out of their comfort zones, handling the pellets with curiosity and enthusiasm, even though it was new and unfamiliar. As inquirers, they posed questions and made observations that deepened their understanding of the food chain, animal behavior, and ecosystems.
By engaging in such activities, students not only develop a love for science but also build the problem-solving mindset and perseverance that scientists use every day. We are proud to see their growing interest in the world around them and look forward to more exciting discoveries ahead!
Car park etiquette
Our staff and students have recently noticed that some cars have been left idling, with engines on, while parked or stationary in the upper car park and drop-off area. We would like to kindly remind people to help do all they can to keep our air clean by switching off their engines. Thank you!

School photographs - new students and absent students
School photographs of students who missed the original photograph day last semester will be taken this coming Wednesday (5 February 2024). This includes students who weren’t present on the previous day, either because they are new to ISA or because they were absent on that particular day.
