Counsellor's Corner

Learning how to cope with change builds resilience

Our teachers are wrapping up end year routines with closure activities, along with culminating activities like plays, house challenges, high school graduation and other celebrations. Our school counsellors are busy helping new students register for their next year courses.  5th grade is preparing for their first year in middle school and will be visiting 6th grade soon.  Our 8th grade students are preparing for high school and learning about our high school diploma pathways, IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP).

Some of our students are preparing for international moves, and some are participating in fun goodbye activities for friends that are leaving. While all of these changes are exciting this time of year, the changes in routines can sometimes be distracting or worrying for the students.

Big Life Journal has some great advice on how to develop a growth mindset with change:

  • Give them time to prepare
  • Listen to their concerns
  • Read books about big life changes
  • Keep routines simple
  • Provide connection or play
  • Give them realistic choices for a sense of agency
  • Talk about changes that they have been successful with in the past

Best wishes with all the changes coming up!

Warm regards,

Valerie DeGraw
