Holistic Wellbeing

ISA takes a holistic approach to wellbeing using multi-tiered systems of support called Response to Intervention.

We often use the Shanarri wellbeing indicators when discussing student wellbeing.  These indicators (Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, and Included), help to guide how we assist students with positive growth. The indicators are based on the Scottish safeguarding framework of “Getting it Right for Every Child” (Girfec).

If a parent has a question about their child they can contact the Key Worker (preschool), Classroom Teacher (elementary) and Advisor or Head of Grade (middle and high school). In Middle and High School dynamic academic feedback is regularly available through the Powerschool system to help you keep up to date with academic growth.

Parents can also contact our School Counsellor, Valerie DeGraw, for help with holistic care at any age.  She is available for a quick chat or more focused care regarding social, academic, and wellbeing interventions or referrals. Heather Barker, our High School University and Careers Counsellor works with Grades 9 to 12 on finding the right post-secondary pathway and placement, she is an excellent resource regarding our flexible pathways and aspirations.

We have regular student support team meetings to help take a coordinated approach and our school nurse, Fran Sibbett, comes to our wellbeing meetings to complete the picture. She is also available to families for community child health referrals.  Our learning support team Hannah Powell, Ulrika Atkinson, and Jo Lockhart coordinate academic interventions for learning variabilities.  Our learning support team is developing UDL approaches (universal design for learning), and are available to help guide teachers towards multiple strategies for learning and engagement.

We all look forward to supporting your child’s holistic wellbeing this year!

Warm regards,

Valerie DeGraw
