Parent Teacher Conferences

As October turns into November, this time of year always holds a special place in my heart. Beyond the vibrant autumn colours and festive celebrations like Halloween, Diwali, Bonfire Night, and Dia de los Muertos, it’s also the time of Major League Baseball’s World Series, the so-called ‘Fall Classic,’ where the two best teams face off in a thrilling best-of-seven showdown.

Baseball is a game of strategy, timing and reflection. In the World Series, teams don’t just play one game; they play a series, with each game providing insights that shape the next. Managers and coaches study performance, consider the strengths of each player, and make thoughtful decisions: when to leave a pitcher in or bring in a relief arm, when to call for a pinch hitter or runner, or when to adjust defensive positioning. Every choice is made with the team’s overall success in mind. And importantly, the breaks between games (the time to rest, recover, and reflect) are essential for refining strategy and planning the next steps.

Parent Teacher Conferences work in much the same way. They are our scheduled pauses in the school year: opportunities to step back, review how students are developing, and discuss what adjustments can help them continue to grow. Like a baseball manager preparing for the next game in the series, teachers and parents/carers come together to consider which strategies are working, who and what should be involved in next steps, and how best to support each child’s development moving forward. No one can succeed alone; just as a baseball team relies on each player contributing their best while supporting teammates, our students flourish when families, teachers, and the students themselves collaborate closely.

After all, the best education occurs when there is a dynamic dialogue between all of the stakeholders: students, families and teachers. Our Assistant Principal, Paul Bertolotto, regularly speaks in quite eloquent terms about the importance of triangulating our approach to a holistic education, which includes both social-emotional and academic development. The Parent Teacher Conferences are opportunities to strengthen the relationships between students, teachers and parents/carers. Through our conversations and shared observations, we can ensure that we are working together to support the children on the next steps in their learning journeys.

Parent Teacher Conferences are just one part of the ongoing dialogue between teachers, students, and families. Ahead of your conference, you might ask your child:

  • What feedback have you received recently, and what has been most useful?
  • What learning experiences have you enjoyed most?
  • Where are you hoping to grow, and what challenges are you ready to tackle?

Our Elementary School conferences will take place over several days next week. In the Elementary School, we encourage in-person meetings, allowing conversations to happen in the learning environment itself. If you cannot attend an in-person conference, and an online conference is preferable in this instance, please let your child’s classroom teacher know so that a Google Meet link can be issued for your scheduled time.

Once again this year, conference bookings will be made using Google Calendar’s appointment scheduling feature. Use the links in this document to select your time slot, and click “Jump to the next available date” to find an opening.

We hope to see you next week for your child’s conference. Just as a World Series team uses the time between games to analyse, adjust, and plan for victory, these Parent Teacher Conferences give us a moment to reflect, recalibrate, and ensure every student has the support they need to succeed…together, as a team.
