Grade 6 Parent Coffee
Our head of grade 6, Ms. Dreelan, enjoyed seeing everyone at our Grade 6 Parent Coffee before winter break. Now that our students have transitioned successfully to middle school, she and the advisory teachers spent some time talking about how to help them grow with confidence, while still keeping a supportive safety net in place.
One strategy focused on was encouraging parents to use PowerSchool to check assignments with their child once a week and to look for patterns with assignments, accomplishments, and any missed work, while reflecting together on study habits. Google Classroom was also reviewed, along with how to access the assignment list on PowerSchool. If you missed the coffee, please reach out to your child's advisory teacher or head of grade for help with any questions.
As Grade 6 students, your children are beginning the IB Middle Years Programme. This framework is designed to help students connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world.
What makes the MYP different?
- Broad Curriculum: Students explore eight subject areas, including the arts, sciences, and design, to find where their passions lie.
-Learning How to Learn: We focus on "Approaches to Learning" (ATL) skills, such as organization, research, and communication.
-Real-World Context: Lessons are taught through global "lenses" so students understand the purpose and impact of their studies.
We look forward to seeing the students develop their confidence even further in the second semester of 6th grade!
Warm Regards,
Valerie DeGraw
School Counsellor
