Counsellor's Corner

Adolescence and how we spend our time - it's so important for the brain!

As small children we generalise by learning as much as we can.  During adolescence we "prune" our interests, and learn to focus on our passions.  If we nurture healthy hobbies, sports and passions during adolescence, this can have a positive impact on lifelong wellbeing and learning.

Dan Siegel is an expert on the teenage brain.  He celebrates this time in life, and reminds us that many myths about this age aren't true. Using attention (an important executive function), and focusing on what we want to improve, can change the structure of our brain in a positive way.

This Friday and Saturday ISA will host our annual middle school basketball tournament with local and international teams. Everyone is invited to cheer on the athletes in our games hall. See schedule hereWe are proud of the students for preparing for, and participating in a school event that shows their passion for healthy sport and exercise!

Take a look at Dan Siegel's short video here, and start thinking about some hobbies, sports, instruments, or creative pursuits to nurture and support  your young person.  It's much more important than you might realise.

Have a lovely weekend.

Warm regards,
