Tournaments and Concerts
Our boys basketball tournament hosted schools from as far afield as Turkey, while ISA girls' teams were in Rome. Next week we welcome schools from across Europe to our AMIS music festival. But sadly not the middle east; schools from that region have had to cancel.
International connections are a wonderful thing. Meeting different people from around the world challenges are assumptions and exposes stereotypes. The chance to engage with different perspectives and experience a wider world is an important part of what these internationl tournaments and concerts provide.
When they are disrupted, it is an important reminder that we are closely connected to global events; in our interconnected world, no-one insulated. Wars elsewhere are not some abstraction but affect people we have learnt to see are like us.
More than 85 years ago, a British prime minister once claimed that Czechoslavakia was 'a far away county about which we know litte' as an excuse to not care. But even back then, the events of one region couldn't be contained.
In a time of conflict, it is all the more important celebrate peace, and the opportunities for students from such different backgrounds to play sport and make music in harmony together.
