Empowering Our Students: The Next Chapter in Peer Mediation
As a reflective school community, we know that real growth comes from constantly looking inward and asking ourselves, “How can we make this even better?” For well over a year, we have watched our restorative practice and peer mediation programme go from strength to strength. We have seen first hand how equipping our students with the tools to resolve conflicts both inside and outside of school, transforms not just our corridors, but the way our students interact with the world.
This week, we took another step forward in that journey. We had the privilege of welcoming Peer Mediation Scotland to our campus for a full day of intensive training. However, this wasn't just a refresher course; it was a "Train the Trainer" program. Our goal is to make our peer mediation programme sustainable by giving our own students and staff the expertise to train others.
During our time together, we dove deep into the core aspects of peer mediation, focusing on:
- Non-violent communication: Learning to express needs and observations without blame or judgement.
- Conflict resolution: Finding common ground and collaborative solutions.
- Active listening: Truly hearing one another to build empathy and understanding.
What made this day even more special was the incredible cross-section of our community that attended. Staff from all corners of the school took part, including Preschool, Elementary, Middle, and High School. I got to learn alongside our Heads of Grade, Elementary Teachers, Counsellors, Student Leader Coordinators, and, most importantly, a dedicated group of our student peer mediators.

Hearing this feedback from leading experts in the field was validating. It is a testament to the hard work our staff and students have put into building a culture of empathy and accountability over the past year and a half since we implemented the programme. Because of this week's training, we have reached an exciting milestone. We now feel completely ready and empowered to host this training in-house. By keeping this expertise within our walls, we can sustainably train our next generation of peer mediators, ensuring these essential life skills remain a cornerstone of our school culture for years to come.
